Monty Pythons beroemdste lied is feitelijk het Britse equivalent van Waarheen waarvoor van Mieke Telkamp. Het was immers jarenlang het populairste lied op begrafenissen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Toen Graham Chapman, een van de andere Pythons, overleed sprak liedschrijver Eric Idle op diens begrafenis een lofrede uit en zong het lied samen met de overgebleven Pythons. Het verhaal gaat ook dat de bemanning van een Britse torpedobootjager na een raketaanval tijdens de Falkandoorlog het lied zongen in afwachting van hun redding. 

Always look on the bright side of life vormde het slotakkoord van de film Life of Brian uit 1979 als Brian, gespeeld door Idle, wordt gekruisigd voor zijn rol in een ontvoering. Met hem hangen nog zo’n twintig mannen aan het kruis en Brian begint een liedje te zingen om zijn lotgenoten een beetje op te vrolijken. Die ironie is onbetaalbaar.
